Hi-tech railway project welcomed in Cowlairs    21/05/08

Work on a new £19.7million railway operations centre is steaming ahead in North Glasgow.  The development – on former waste ground in Cowlairs, near the railway – is being led by Network Rail and is on course to be complete by the autumn.

The centre will include a £7.4million railway maintenance depot – allowing Network Rail to consolidate nine smaller depots from across central Scotland on to one single site.

A £12.3million signalling centre is also being built as part of an ongoing modernisation of Glasgow’s railway infrastructure and will provide a state-of-the-art signalling operation facility for the west of Scotland – replacing the existing centre at Glasgow central and other signalling boxes in the region.

Around 150 workers are expected to be based at the new facility, most of whom will transfer from other sites.

Springburn MSP Paul Martin and local councillors Allan Stewart and Jim Todd visited the development, which as been welcomed as a great boost for the area.

Mr Martin said: “This represents a huge investment in my constituency and I welcome the company’s decision to base these skilled jobs in the Cowlairs area.  I believe the operations centre will ultimately result in an improved perception of the area.  I hope that, together with the local community, we can capitalise on this venture and encourage more companies to invest in North Glasgow.
